Saṁyutta Nikāya — The Connected Discourses

SN23: Connected Discourses with Radha

SN23:23 Māra

1At Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Radha said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it would be good if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief, so that, having heard the Dhamma from the Blessed One, I might dwell alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent, and resolute."

"Radha, you should abandon desire, you should abandon lust, you should abandon desire and lust, for whatever is Māra. And what, Radha, is Māra?

"Form, Radha, is Māra. You should abandon desire, you should abandon lust, you should abandon desire and lust, for it.

Feeling is Māra. You should abandon desire, you should abandon lust, you should abandon desire and lust, for it.

Perception is Māra. You should abandon desire, you should abandon lust, you should abandon desire and lust, for it.

Volitional formations are Māra. You should abandon desire, you should abandon lust, you should abandon desire and lust, for it.

Consciousness is Māra. You should abandon desire, you should abandon lust, you should abandon desire and lust, for it.

"Seeing thus, the instructed noble disciple experiences revulsion towards form, revulsion towards feeling, revulsion towards perception, revulsion towards volitional formations, revulsion towards consciousness.

Experiencing revulsion, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion his mind is liberated. When it is liberated there comes the knowledge: ‘It's liberated.’ He understands: ‘Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being.’"
